Oregon Road Trip

We took a road trip after Christmas, but it turned out to be one of the wettest weeks on the west coast. Tons and tons of rain, including some of the heaviest rain I’ve seen in a long time, and snow. This changed our plans for multiple points on the trip and we missed a […]
Ventura to Santa Barbara Bike Tour

A quick mini bike tour vacation.Sunday we left the house and headed to Melrose ave, to ride the ciclavia event there. Honestly, not my favorite CicLAvia , but still fun. It was a short course, and had some fun Stranger Things themed decorations, but it was just too crowded for my taste. From there we […]
David Byrne of the Talking Heads

Absolutely legendary. I’ve been fortunate to go to a lot of concerts over the years, especially in the 1990-2010 range. And there have always been a handful of shows that have stood above the others as memorable to me. Tonight David Byrne (Talking Heads) put on a show that easily joined the very shortest list […]
Alhambra Pumpkin Run 5K

Another 5k. 1300+ entries. Margot was 3rd in her age group, 10th female overall, and 56th overall! Hazel was 14th in her age group. Proud of them both.
Mt Sac Cross Country

Margot ran her second ever cross country meet today, at Mt. Sac. She finished 32 out of 106 in her race, and was pretty upset that she thinks she could have done much much better. Before the race we had watched other races finish ( it’s a big event with teams from all over), and […]
Pasadena Trail Run Cross Country 5K

Hazel and Margot ran a local trail 5k this morning. Both did great. There were about 60 people entered, and Margot was 8th overall, 3rd female, and 2 female under 18!
Ciclavia Downtown Los Angeles

I Ciclavia.
Margot’s first official Cross Country Race

Margot had her first official race with the middle school cross country team today. There were about seventy girls from 6 different schools In the middle school category. (6,7,8th grade). Margot was 13th overall, and 4th for 6th grade! Big thanks to Coach Adam for the time and effort he puts into the team.
Pulp and LCD Soundsystem Concert

Pulp and LCD Soundsystem Hazel loves Pulp. She was a little surprised to find out they are in their 60’s and that most of the crowd is my age or older, lol. We had a really great time at the concert. Kim and Margot decided to spend the money on a dinner out instead.
South Korea

As part of our Asia Trip, we spent a few days in South Korea.
Japan

Our last week of our asia trip was spent in Japan.
Taiwan

We spent two weeks in Taiwan, and had a great time, was super fun to watch the girls navigate a new country, and to use the mandarin they have been studying for years now.
Ciclavia Venice Beach

I love Ciclavia. Such a simple idea but so great.
Wirepass Gulch

Even after 16 days in the Grand Canyon, Margot asked if there were any cool hikes we could do on our way home from Flagstaff. So we did a kind of really silly long way home extension and hiked Wire Pass Gulch in Grand Escalante national monument. It was a fantastic short (2.5 hours or […]
Mojave Lava Tubes

Detour in the Mojave on our way to the Grand Canyon
Rafting Near Kyoto

I’ve been enjoying our Asia trip, but it’s definitely been a fair bit city focused. I was seriously feeling the need to “touch grass”, so I signed the girls and myself* for a half day trip rafting. It was about 45 minutes by train outside Kyoto. The river was pretty, and we really enjoyed swimming […]
Osaka Aquarium

Slightly mixed feelings about big animals like whale sharks in captivity, but thousands of people see them here that would never see them in the wild, and maybe some percentage of those people will be motivated to make choices that are better for the earth. Osaka Aquarium is pretty nice. Maybe the coolest I’ve been […]
Sun Moon Lake

We rented some bikes for a hot but very enjoyable ride on the bike path around Sun Moon lake. Had a great time. Margot was thrilled to see wild monkeys!
Hualien

We took the cheap, fast and really nice train* down to Hualien, on the east coast of Taiwan, and enjoyed a couple of days there, despite the abundant rain. We got a pretty good shake from a 4.9 magnitude earthquake that was relatively close! We found tons of amazing and cheap food, including a dumpling […]
Singapore

Singapore is an interesting city state. It has a variety of cultures represented, and food everywhere. Food seemed to come in two varieties, cheap hawker stalls or expensive restaurants, and not much in between. I was blown away by how much of the city seemed to consist of shopping malls. Mall after mall after mall. […]
Snorkeling Rarotonga

A good chunk of the island of Rarotonga is surrounded by a shallow lagoon, protected from waves by the reef. This makes for some great snorkeling, with much of it easily accessible from the beach. Just from the beach we saw tons of colorful reef fish, eels, turtles, starfish, and more.
Island Life – Aitutaki

Aitutaki is a tiny island with a huge lagoon. There are a handful of small resorts, but the island is probably one of the least developed places we’ve been. For dinner, there are just a few places to eat (we did find one we loved), and overall just a sleepy sleepy island. The highlight was […]
Snorkeling Aitutaki

We booked two full day private boat tours with T’s Tours Aitutaki. It was a bit of a splurge, but felt so worth it. We had an awesome time doing several extended snorkels, so time exploring the motus and islands. An absolute treat.
Island Life – Rarotonga

Although we spent much of our time on this trip in the water, we also enjoyed some great meals, an awesome fire show, fun markets, and just exploring.
Rarotonga Scuba Diving

I had hoped to do a couple days of diving on Rarotonga and on Aitutaki, but for various reasons we only ended up doing one. Was a super fun day, with Hazel and I doing two dives in the morning, and then Kim joining us for one dive in the afternoon. Margot snorkeled with a […]
On the field with Angel City

Margot was thrilled to get to walk onto the field with the amazing @sarahlgorden for the season opener @weareangelcity game last week! Her soccer club made it happen through the Angel City Dream team experience.
Joshua Tree National Park Compilation

Joshua Tree National Park is a mesmerizing playground for climbers and adventurers alike. My first visit was during my brother’s wedding, and I was instantly captivated by its unique beauty. After moving to California, J-Tree became my winter sanctuary, where I forged friendships with fellow regulars and created unforgettable memories. Over nearly 30 years, I’ve witnessed its evolution, and while I still cherish every moment spent there, I worry about its future. It’s essential to treat this delicate environment with the respect it deserves.
SF American River Compilation

This dam-controlled stretch offers three exhilarating runs: the exciting Chili Bar, the scenic Coloma to Lotus, and the breathtaking Gorge. With easy access and dependable recreational releases, this river is a must-visit for both seasoned rafters and newcomers alike. We’ve been a bunch of times over this years, and this is a compilation page for those trips.
Katy’s Wedding

Congratulations to my sister Katy on her marriage. and thank you for inviting me to officiate. Was a really nice way to kick off 2025. She is an elementary school teacher, and invited her students to make cards that she then framed and used to decorate the reception area. This was my favorite.
Ice Skating

Ice Skating with the Cousins
Houston Zoo

It was very wet and rainy, but we had a nice time at the Houston zoo with Dad/Duckie. (My father, girls grandfather)
Houston Space Center

A nice visit to the Houston space center with my father. I think I was more into than the girls, and it was stupid crowded, but cool to see the rockets and other space stuff.
EMEI Concert
Hazel loves listening to music. She’s been listening a lot to an up and coming artist named Emei. Emei is pretty catchy, sort of Chappel Roan-ish with some Billie Eilish vibes, in the opinion of a nearly 50 year old man who still mostly listens to R.E.M. and the Talking heads. Apparently Spotify noticed how […]
Alex’s Wedding

Celebrating with cousin Alex and Amanda More Photo booth Photos here
Photo Booth Fun

Alhambra Pumpkin Run

This kid is pretty awesome. Hazel ran the Alhambra pumpkin run 5k
Pasadena Trail 5k

Hazel and Margot ran a trail run 5k this morning with some of the Sierra Madre Middle school cross country team. Margot is not in middle school yet, but trains twice a week with the middle school team. Both girls did amazing. Margot was 16th overall and 3rd Female under 19! She was the youngest […]
Knott’s Scary Farm

Today was a really nice day, just me and Margot. Apologies to her teacher for being wiped out tomorrow.
Ciclavia

Margot played all of a hard fought soccer game this morning, with no subs. Then we rode 15 miles at ciclavia. Impressed as always by this kiddo.
Beach Day

Heat warning at the house. So we drove 25 miles to the beach. It’s kinda cold here.
