HS Soccer

Hazel had her first high school soccer match, starting for the JV team. It was pouring rain and pretty cold! Hazel played great, with 3 solid assists for goals and almost a goal in the first half. At halftime they were winning by 5-0, both teams were wet and cold, and the other team forfeit […]

Halloween

Had a fun Thanksgiving. Both girls dressed up, Hazel went with friends to trick or treat and have a sleepover. Kim and I met up with Margot and her friends and went trick or treating. Margot won a $20 gift card from a costume contest!

Alhambra Pumpkin Run 5K

Another 5k. 1300+ entries. Margot was 3rd in her age group, 10th female overall, and 56th overall! Hazel was 14th in her age group. Proud of them both.

Coffee for a hard worker

Hazel has been working really hard at school this year. Soccer practice 4 days a week after school, volunteering, an AP class as a freshman, student newspaper, homework, etc. There have been some late evenings and skipping some family stuff to work. She’s been putting in the work for sure. Last night, as I was […]

Pasadena Trail Run Cross Country 5K

Hazel and Margot ran a local trail 5k this morning. Both did great. There were about 60 people entered, and Margot was 8th overall, 3rd female, and 2 female under 18!

Pulp and LCD Soundsystem Concert

Pulp and LCD Soundsystem Hazel loves Pulp. She was a little surprised to find out they are in their 60’s and that most of the crowd is my age or older, lol. We had a really great time at the concert. Kim and Margot decided to spend the money on a dinner out instead.

Junior Guides Raft Camp

Jr. Guides Raft camp! A favorite. It’s a three day raft camp aimed at teaching some raft guide skills to kids. That’s little Margot in the guide seat in the first two photos, with the white helmet. Hazel in the black helmet in the last photo. There were several times during my kind of nuts […]

Wagyu

We have a tradition in our family where the kids get to choose their birthday dinners. Sushi has been the most common choice. Tonight, after trying a few different cuts of Wagyu Beef, Margot announced “oh, my birthday dinners are getting way more expensive. I want wagyu for my birthday!”

Museum of illusion

I wouldn’t call it a must visit, it was kind of expensive and crowded. But we had a good time and it does make for some fun photos.

Dance

Dressed up for a fancy dance!

School Soccer

Last week Hazel’s team broke a 4 year losing streak for her school with a win. (Much of the team, including Hazel and some other strong teammates are new this year). This week they followed it up with another 4-2 win, and that was despite playing a player-down from the other team, and having no […]

Baking

My little baker got up at 6 this morning and made cinnamon roll pancakes. I thought they were pretty delicious. Yesterday she made breakfast tacos. We also got dutch baby pancake s

Breaking a bad streak

Hazel and her teammates broke a FOUR YEAR losing streak for the girls team at her school. Solid 4-1 win yesterday. Hazel’s second game with the school. She’s very excited for soccer.

Sick Day

Hazel is home sick today. She texted me this: I’m stuck at home Super-duper sick No places to roam I wish this was a trick I’m so bored This house is so quiet Outside birds soared What rhymes with quiet I’ll be better by tonight I wish we had more guacamole By friday I’ll be […]

On the field with Angel City

Margot was thrilled to get to walk onto the field with the amazing @sarahlgorden for the season opener @weareangelcity game last week! Her soccer club made it happen through the Angel City Dream team experience.

Gluten Free Carrot Cake

Hazel made the fluffiest lightest best cake I’ve had in the nearly 20 years I’ve been eating gluten free. Was delicious and you absolutely could have served it without mentioning the gf part and no one would have ever suspected. Really good, and carrot cake is my favorite so I really enjoyed it. We got […]

Houston Zoo

It was very wet and rainy, but we had a nice time at the Houston zoo with Dad/Duckie. (My father, girls grandfather)

AYSO Fall

Hazel played fall AYSO this year, and had a good time with a good bunch of girls.

Thanksgiving

Since the girls have the week off school, we normally try and travel for Thanksgiving. But Kim had some work and Margot had some party invites, so we hung out locally and I took the opportunity to make my first full thanksgiving meal in maybe 15+ years, and the first ever with the girls. Took […]

Dead Poets Society

Hazel and I watched Dead Poets Society tonight. Tears were shed. Hazel cried too. Apparently in one of her videos for the album Tortured Poets Department, Taylor Swift had two of the stars from Dead Poets Society appear, as a deliberate shout out to the movie. This made Hazel curious about the movie, so I […]

EMEI Concert

Hazel loves listening to music. She’s been listening a lot to an up and coming artist named Emei. Emei is pretty catchy, sort of Chappel Roan-ish with some Billie Eilish vibes, in the opinion of a nearly 50 year old man who still mostly listens to R.E.M. and the Talking heads. Apparently Spotify noticed how […]

Hazel and Margot hunting for dirt

So cute On Mon, Jul 13, 2015, 09:50 Kim <kimluujennings> wrote: Hazel was inspired by a Sid the Science kid cartoon and decided she wanted to "hunt for dirt and investigate what’s in dirt." Hazel’s backpack contained a notebook, pen, and magnifying glass. Margot was the sidekick helper; Margot’s backpack was empty.

Pasadena Trail 5k

Hazel and Margot ran a trail run 5k this morning with some of the Sierra Madre Middle school cross country team. Margot is not in middle school yet, but trains twice a week with the middle school team. Both girls did amazing. Margot was 16th overall and 3rd Female under 19! She was the youngest […]

Pottery

The girls recently took a 4 day pottery class at a place in Pasadena. I’m really impressed with what they made!

Beach Day

Heat warning at the house. So we drove 25 miles to the beach. It’s kinda cold here.

Baking

At this point, Hazel is just as good at baking as me. Delicious homemade gluten free Cinnamon rolls. This weekend she made blondies and lemon curd cookies. No exaggeration I would put the lemon curd cookies in the top five cookies I’ve ever eaten.

MGA

I’ve been driving the MGA a fair bit lately, but since it only seats two it seems I’ve mostly been using it solo or taking Margot to soccer. Hazel loves the MG and has been asking for a drive so she and I went to breakfast, taking a long route home.

Ciclavia

Some days I wonder if selling Nomad Ice Pops was the right call. But being able to be present for the family and do more things like Ciclavia makes me feel like it was.

PADI Open Water Certification for Hazel

Congratulations to Hazel. She finished her PADI Open Water SCUBA course today and is now a certified diver. Millions of thanks to Michael Francisco for his skilled, patient and kind instruction. If anyone in SoCal wants to learn to dive, I can say he is an absolute top notch instructor. I’ve been diving for 30+ […]

Grand Canyon 2023

After years of looking for a trip, I got an invite for myself plus one for a trip launching July 2023. Kim wasn’t available, so I asked Hazel. She was game and before long we were driving out to AZ. I was honestly pretty nervous about rowing the Grand Canyon. Although I have done a […]

Discover Diving

With our trip being extremely last minute, and Hawaii being busy, just about every activity I called about was booked solid. But I found a discover scuba for two people and signed Kim and Hazel up. When Hazel had gone to Catalina with me to do her open water class, she had trouble doing a […]

Covid-19

Margot and Hazel are playing in the living room, and our of nowhere Margot says, in a uncharacteristically serious little voice looks at Hazel and says: " I know right now is a tough time for a lot of people, so thank you for making my life better right now"

Words

Hazel is an avid, avid reader, and devours books. She seems to pick up and use new words really well too. The funny part is that she frequently uses words that she is learned from a book, but probably hasn’t heard much, so she uses the word correctly but frequently pronounces it completely off.

Saving

I told the kids I’d give them $3 each for the field festival. Hazel wanted five. I said no but she could make up the difference with her piggy bank. Margot said she would take money out of her piggy bank. Hazel said “no, I’ll just keep the three and save my piggy bank money […]
