Santa Cruz surf kayak contest is the biggest contest on the west coast.  Great waves this year, and fun people as always.  Every year I think I’m surfing much better than last year, and I probably am, but so is everyone else!  So i didn’t do as well as I’d hoped, but I had a good time.

I accidentally dropped in on Dessie. didn't see him soon enough, tried to get off the wave and failed... Doh.

I had such a fantastic time at the US Waveski National Championships! Competing with over 78 paddlers, including amazing athletes from Australia and South Africa, it was the best contest of my competition history.

We’re lucky to live in an incredible part of the country. Within a few hours drive of house, we got the ocean, mountains, lakes, forests, deserts and a big city. We try and keep pretty busy, and have some great adventures around here. In the

We got a super late start Friday night, and it was an all night slog to Davenport, with just a few hours of fitful dozing alongside the highway. But I made it to the contest, and had a great time. Didn’t surf as well as

Thanks to Dave for setting up the Pismo Beach Surf Kayak contest. Due to permit issues, low turnout, and predictions of small waves sunday, the contest was condensed to one day. That mean I was surfing 9 heats in a day. (High Performance, International Class,

This past weekend was the national championship for surf kayaking, held at Davenport, CA, and organized by Buck Johnson. I went down a day early to get a practice session in. Friday was super fun. I was on the water from 9 a.m. to 5

My Girlfriend Kim and I recently spent 6 days exploring the Northern part of Baja. Click on the small map to the right for a bit more detail. She wrote a trip report, which is here. My comments were added in Green Text. It’s long,

There have been a few different contests for waveskis and kayaks held at Ventura over the years, including the first surf kayak I ever attended, and later my best contest finish ever where I was ranked as the #2 American waveski paddler. I don’t have

The biggest paddle surf contest in the world. Held for many years at the incredible steamer lane.

Davenport is a unique cove for surf. When it’s big, there is a deep water channel that allows you to paddle out in conditions that would make many beaches impossible. I’ve surfed some big waves there. The contest was a staple on the west coast
