Like normal, I was behind prepping for the trip. The day our friends showed up, I was still putting the final touches on the roof rack I built for the van, a roof rack that was an integral part of the plan. But finish I did, and Mike helped me finish up a few things on the van while Paige helped finalize some packing, and early Sunday morning we were off. This trip was a fair chunk of driving, 7 people in one van, so only the kind of thing you’d undertake with people you really like.
Our first stop was San Felipe, where elotes and other street food were picked up, photos were taken, and after a short break we drove on to Bahia de San Luis Gonzaga, a wonderful spot on the Sea of Cortez side. Kim and I had been here 20 years prior (Baja 2022 ) before the road was paved, and it was an exhausting half day drive that ended with a damaged truck. Now it’s narrow but well paved highways, so the miles went quick and we got to camp, set up, and enjoyed a relaxed day and two nights hanging out. Kids had a great time playing and collecting ludicrous amounts of sea shells. We found sand dollars and I taught everyone how to do the Stingray shuffle and we watched them scatter in the shallow clear water. An excellent start to our journey.
