I guess it’s time to start thinking about how to address race with Hazel.
Me : hazel, what did you want for dinner?
Hazel : sushi!
African-american lady next to us, joking: Pizza!
Me: hmm, that sounds good, what do you think Hazel?
Hazel: sushi. But that brown lady said pizza??
Me : uh, Hazel, that’s not a polite way to talk about people. (flustered)
Hazel: But her face is brown?
Lady gave a laugh and an "it’s ok, kids will be kids" smile.
