There have been a few different contests for waveskis and kayaks held at Ventura over the years, including the first surf kayak I ever attended, and later my best contest finish ever where I was ranked as the #2 American waveski paddler.

I don’t have a post or pictures of it, but my dear friend Chris Russ (r.i.p.) and I once had a surf session at this same spot that will forever be a cherished memory. We had paddled all weekend in huge surf at Jalama, to the north, and were on our way home, dog tired and with jello arms. But as we crested a hill, we could see lines forming at the point. Chris suggested stopping “Just to look”. But sure enough we were soon pulling out our boats and paddling out for what turned into one of the best surf sessions I ever had, with perfect head high+ waves lining up, one after another. They were wrapping into the cove at a perfect angle for a steep take off into a powerful pocket that just held forever, leading to some of the best and longest rides I’ve ever had in the surf. Amazing and cherished memory with my friend.

I had such a fantastic time at the US Waveski National Championships! Competing with over 78 paddlers, including amazing athletes from Australia and South Africa, it was the best contest of my competition history.
In 2008, California hosted the US national surf kayak championships at Davenport, CA. We had amazing conditions, and a great contest.

Just a fun couple days skiing at Mammoth and June.

At a time when there is a lot of anti-immigration rhetoric and bs from the right against government aid, this article about Kim’s family’s voyage to the US and their early years here is really worth a read. My life, and our country, are richer

Today Margot faced a fear and got to be brave. We spent some time working through her fear of doing a wet exit in an upside down kayak. It’s basically just staying calm, finding the grab loop on the skirt, pulling it, and exiting the
